The Artwork - Kalbarri
Shot from a rather loose plane window on a rather windy day with rather poor visibility, Cybele was leaning her 200mm lens out the window as far is it would reach without the wind snapping it from her hands and delivering it to the pink sea below. Hutt Lagoon’s iconic pink is created by the presence of carotenoid-producing algae blooms. The typically bright pink lake was a more subdued colour on this winter day. To understand the vastness of this country, look into the fractalike shores of this lake. This could be a microscopic slide, or a satellite image shot from beyond the atmosphere. The vast sombre, defiantly still landscape of Australia, unique and at times alien to the bucolic rural landscapes of continents abroad.
Kalbarri is a part of the traditional lands of the Nanda people who were recognised as the traditional owners of more than 17,000 square kilometres (6,600 sq mi) of land and water in the Yamatji region, in Western Australia,
The story of the Beemarra serpent is the central dreaming story of Nanda people. The Beemarra is, according to Nanda culture, an ancestral being responsible for the creation of the land and waters in the region.
Kalbarri was named after an Aboriginal man from the Nanda tribe and is also the name of an edible seed.
